The structure of SAP Basis
If all financial and sales activities as well as production, logistics and the personnel administrators run via one system, measures must be taken to ensure reliable functioning on the one hand and to protect the system internally and externally on the other. Due to the long history, the increased availability requirements often do not match the actual protection measures, so that security risks often arise at this point.
Application layer: The application layer is the core of an R/3 SAP Basis system. This layer communicates in both directions, to the presentation layer and to the database layer. The application programs on the application servers request the required data from the database layer, process it, prepare it for the user and pass it on to the presentation layer. Data that the user enters in the SAP GUI is passed on to the database via the application servers.

The positioning depends strongly on the previously identified target groups and must be justified accordingly. Positioning is extremely important for the SAP basis. It is primarily a matter of positioning within the IT organisation and defining or positioning the other IT departments that can be considered as competitors in the context of this step. STEP 6: OWN EMPLOYEES This step will identify the necessary skills and training of their own employees necessary to fulfil the objectives and provide the service.
