In the past, when we deployed SAP environments, we first had to work out detailed sizing and architecture and pass this on to the procurement team, who then ordered the systems and installed them in the data center. From there, it went on to the network team, the storage team, the operating system team, and the database team. So it was not uncommon for three to six months to pass between the architecture design and the installation of a new SAP system.
In many companies, the SAP system is the linchpin of everyday business. To ensure that the system is available at all times, an SAP Basis team ensures its smooth operation.
PERFORMANCE
Technical developments are progressing at high speed. Thus, the term "blockchain" is not unique to digital currencies. Instead, there is talk of a technology that will disrupt existing products, services, and even business models. In order to better assess the potential and impact of blockchain technology, various companies from different technologies and, in particular, financial sectors have joined forces in consortia in recent years: The R3 Consortium, which is primarily a consortium of about 80 financial sector companies (UBS, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, ...). The IoT Consortium, which includes Bosch Ltd, Cisco Systems Inc, is investigating how blockchain technology can be used to secure and improve IoT networks. More than 120 financial, banking, IoT and industrial companies have joined the Hyperledger (Enterprise Ethereum Alliance) consortium. SAP Basis refers to the administration of SAP system that includes activities like installation and configuration, load balancing, and performance of SAP applications running on Java stack and SAP ABAP. This includes the maintenance of different services related to database, operating system, application and web servers in SAP system landscape and stopping and starting the system. Today, "SAP Basis" often does not mean (only) the software architecture. Instead, the term is not infrequently a task description. This refers to the basic administration of the system: installation and configuration, resource management, maintenance and monitoring of a company's SAP setups. This can include user management, patch management and system monitoring. Backup policy, rights management and daily maintenance tasks are also responsibilities of Basis admins.
Some missing SAP basic functions in the standard are supplied by the PC application "Shortcut for SAP Systems".
A useful definition of thresholds, for example on the basis of historical system behaviour, must also be defined for monitoring.
